🌳 We fight for our trees.
They contribute beauty, shade, and clean air to our block.
🌱 Grow stronger roots.
We expand the tree wells to give our trees room to thrive and last for generations.
🛡️ Guard what matters.
We install and maintain NYC-approved tree guards to protect our green investments.
🌸 Bring beauty to the block.
We plant spring bulbs, summer flowers, and winter greens to uplift the spirits of everyone on our block.
🧹 Clean with purpose.
We maintain the tree wells and clean the sidewalks to keep East 78th looking its best.

Let’s build a block we’re proud of. Together.

About Trees 78 Foundation
Our roots run deep on East 78th Street, in the heart of the Upper East Side.
Our historical base for over 30 years was the 100 Block between Lexington and Third Avenues. Started as an informal Block Association by Dr. & Mrs Fletcher McDowell in the late 1970’s, it was led for many years by Mrs. McDowell. In 2019 the Association was reorganized, named Trees 78 Foundation, and designated a 501(c)(3) nonprofit by the IRS and NYS. In 2021 we were joined by the 200 Block between Third and Second Avenues, and in future years we hope to include other East 78th Street Blocks.
Rooted in Responsibility
Trees 78 Foundation recognizes that all trees and tree wells on East 78th Street are owned exclusively by New York City. Trees 78 Foundation tries to ensure that every step we take — from planting to preservation — aligns with the City’s “One Million Trees” standards. For all work done on behalf of Trees 78 Foundation we partner with NYC-licensed contractors and operate under appropriate permits and regulations in coordination with relevant NYC agencies.
Powered by Community. Backed by the City.
We are deeply grateful to the New York City Tree Trust and the City Parks Foundation for their support and assistance over many years.
But be assured our lifeblood is YOU — all our work is funded by annual donations from the buildings on East 78th Street and the residents who live in them. Every tree guard, flower planting, and sidewalk cleanup is made possible through your thoughtful, generous, contributions, for which we Thank You in advance!
Together, we're growing something lasting.
Let’s keep East 78th blooming for generations to come.
Our mission: a green, clean, and beautiful East 78th Street.
